Alaska Aurora Adventure

Alaska Aurora Adventure

An Overnight Journey Discovering Winter and the Aurora Borealis in Alaska.

As the falling snow turns the landscape white, the long days of the Midnight Sun give way to brisk nights and aurora borealis dancing in the sky. This adventure combines the experience of winter in Alaska's second largest city with the wonders of the vast wilderness of Alaska's Arctic, specifically the Brooks Mountain Range north of the Arctic Circle.

  • DAY 1: Air arrival into Fairbanks, Alaska. Shuttle between Fairbanks International Airport and Hotel. Overnight accommodations at Sophie Station Hotel.
  • DAY 2: Today is your day to explore Fairbanks.  Rent a car, explore using the Fairbanks bus system, or utlize a taxi service. Suggestions include visiting downtown Fairbanks or spending the afternoon at the Univeristy of Alaska Museum of the North.  At the museum learn about the diversity of Alaska Native peoples who live in the north. As the state's primary repository of natural and cultural history, see and experience real things, world class specimens and learn from current research. Overnight accommodations at Sophie Station Hotel.
  • DAY 3: Today begin a 4 Day / 3 Night Arctic Circle Aurora Adventure.  Enjoy a flight across the Arctic Circle and experience an aerial view of the vast wilderness of Alaska's Arctic. Upon arrival in Coldfoot enjoy an orientation on the history and present day life of Coldfoot, Alaska. Tonight we suggest you add the optional Arctic Village Aurora. On the evening experience travel through time to the wilderness community of Wiseman, 13 miles north of Coldfoot. Once a thriving gold rush town, today Wiseman is the only year-round lived in community along the Dalton Highway. Learn about Wiseman at the historic Wiseman Museum and watch the sky for the Northern Lights. This region is located directly under the Auroral Oval - where the northern lights originate, thus occurring more frequently and with more intensity than other areas north or south of the oval. Overnight accommodations at Coldfoot Camp.
  • DAY 4: Today enjoy time on your own or add the optional Arctic Mountain Safari. On an Arctic Mountain Safari your guide will take you on a journey on the Dalton Highway deep into the Brooks Mountain Range where you will cross the Arctic Divide and have a chance to look for Dall Sheep and Caribou. This evening relax and scan the northern skies for the northern lights. Overnight accommodations at Coldfoot Camp.
  • DAY 5: Another day to relax in Alaska's Arctic.  Options to suggest would be a Dog Sled Ride. Experience the state sport today on a Dog Sled Adventure. Not only learn about these amazing dogs and take a ride in the sled, try your own hand at driving a team. Enjoy time on your own. Share stories in the Trucker's CafĂ©, enjoy reading a book, or take a pair of snowshoes out to explore the region further. Tonight would be a good night to add a second Arctic Village Aurora. Overnight accommodations at Coldfoot Camp.
  • DAY 6: Today experience winter in Alaska's Arctic with a guided ground tour from Coldfoot to Fairbanks on the famous Dalton Highway. The region provides a wide canvas for the distinct snowscapes created by the wind over the treeless tundra. Spend the day learning the story of Alaska's Arctic as you travel over the arctic tundra, stop at the actual Arctic Circle sign, and cross the Yukon River. Overnight accommodations at Sophie Station Hotel.
  • DAY 7: Today is another day to explore Fairbanks.  Suggestions would be:  a visit to the Santa Claus House in the city of North Pole, a trip to Chena Hot Springs Resort, or take in a local event (check the events listings at  Overnight accommodations at Sophie Station Hotel.
  • DAY 8: Shuttle between hotel and Fairbanks International Airport. Air departure from Fairbanks.
